IBM, short for International Business Machines Corporation, is one of the world’s most influential technology companies and has played a central role in the evolution of modern computing. Although the IBM name officially appeared in 1924, the company’s roots trace back to 1911, when the Computing-Tabulating-Recording Company (CTR) was formed through the merger of several businesses that produced time clocks, tabulating machines, and commercial recording equipment.

During the 1980s, the company entered the personal computer market with the launch of the IBM Personal Computer (IBM PC) in 1981. The IBM PC quickly became a business standard and helped accelerate the worldwide adoption of personal computers. Microsoft supplied the operating system for the IBM PC, creating one of the most significant partnerships in computing history.
Over the following decades, IBM shifted its strategy toward enterprise software, consulting services, cloud computing, cybersecurity, and artificial intelligence. The company sold its personal computer division to Lenovo in 2005, allowing IBM to focus more heavily on business technology solutions and advanced research.
IBM’s commitment to innovation is reflected in its world-class research laboratories, where scientists have contributed to breakthroughs in semiconductors, storage devices, quantum computing, and artificial intelligence. One of its best-known AI systems, IBM Watson, gained worldwide attention in 2011 by defeating top human champions on the quiz show Jeopardy!, demonstrating significant advances in natural language processing and machine learning.
