Although these early bricks were innovative, they lacked the secure connection found in modern LEGO pieces.
The breakthrough came in 1958 when LEGO patented the stud-and-tube coupling system. This revolutionary design allowed bricks to connect firmly while remaining easy to separate. The system created nearly endless building possibilities and remains compatible with modern LEGO bricks today.
Throughout the following decades, LEGO expanded its product range with themed playsets, minifigures, vehicles, castles, cities, pirates, and space adventures. The introduction of the LEGO minifigure in 1978 gave children new ways to create stories and imaginative worlds.
Like many successful companies, LEGO experienced significant challenges. During the late 1990s and early 2000s, increasing competition from video games and changing consumer preferences led to financial difficulties. Through strategic restructuring, improved product focus, and licensing partnerships with franchises such as Star Wars, Harry Potter, Marvel, and DC, LEGO successfully returned to growth.
Today, LEGO continues to innovate through robotics, educational products, digital experiences, movies, video games, and interactive attractions such as LEGOLAND parks.
